Woolworths – Bringing data to life

How we used Google APIs to help Woolworths drive better enterprise awareness.

“Woolworths loved the solution and the data visualisations gave the senior leadership team the confidence to accelerate our timetable”

Who are Woolworths?

Woolworths is an Australian company that was founded in 1924 in Sydney. Woolworths serves around 28 million customers every week. Woolworths Group, Australia’s largest retailer, comprises some of Australia & New Zealand’s most recognised & trusted brands:

The challenge – better visibility of sales revenue across all stores

Woolworths Supermarkets have more than 3,000 stores across Australia and New Zealand and are a proud, homegrown Australian business, employer of more than 198,000 people and committed business partner of many thousand local farmers, producers and manufacturers.

Woolworths Supermarkets were looking for a way to leverage their existing investment in Google Maps to deliver what Optimation calls an “Enterprise Awareness Application” to allow their Executive Team to access sales revenue by region and by store - in real-time.

Our solution – harnessing the power of Google

Optimation developed a web application using the Google Maps API, to provide a visual interface for Woolworths to manage aggregated sales regions (suburbs) for each store.

The application shows aggregate sales and order information as supplied from Woolworth’s data warehouse, via an API. In addition, Optimation developed a Java application hosted within the Google Cloud infrastructure, using drive-time distance between stores to display a heat map layer showing orders and sales. This function was to help executives analyse store performance accurately as different weightings are used depending on orders or sales.

To provide Woolworths with even more Business Intelligence, Optimation used the latest consolidated Australian suburbs dataset to update suburb data within their solution. As part of this process, Optimation identified changes between the existing and the new data, so that any potential issue the update could raise within Woolworths data warehouse could be addressed in real-time.

As an added funcionality for Woolworth’s staff convenience, we extended the application to include the display of drive time within regions. Woolworths supplied a list of pre-set locations from which drive times are calculated.

How our solution led to better Enterprise Awareness

Woolworths staff now has a better overview of their regional performance, along with the option to modify their search to view which regions each store is assigned to within the application. The team can also view and update sales and order details – all in real time.

With this clear presentation of key information, Woolworths’ Executive team can now make better business decisions. The team can address and prevent business performance issues in specific regions - much faster and more accurately than before.
